The Screwtape Letters was the book which really catapulted Lewis to fame on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. In fact, this book got him on the cover of Time magazine. Despite all of this, it was actually one of Lewis’ least favourite books to write and strongly resisted calls for a sequel.
The book is a series of letters from a senior devil to his nephew, a junior tempter. Over the course of their correspondence the senior devil, named Screwtape, instructs his nephew on how to tempt his Christian (referred to as “the patient”) and ultimately secure his soul for Hell. The logic of the book is upside down. When Screwtape refers to “The Enemy”, he’s talking about God and “Our Father’s House” refers to Hell. It is not only a tremendous work of creativity, but of human psychology, as Lewis gives us insight into how we may be led away from God…
