Show Notes

Introduction

Quote-of-the-week

“Myth is… like manna; it is to each man a different dish and to each the dish he needs.”

– C.S. Lewis, “Shelley, Dryden, and Mr Elliot”

Biographical Information

Justin Wiggins is an author from North Carolina who has the distinction of being our first guest on Pints With Jack. All the way back in Season 1, Episode 34, he came on the show to talk about his book, “Surprised By Agape”. Matt and I had the opportunity to hang out with him when we attended the 2019 conference in Montreat, and were part of that legendary night when a small group of us hung out with Lewis’ stepson, Douglas Gresham, and polished off a bottle of Vat 69. A little less than a year ago, just around the time my son was born, he released his new book, “Surprised By Myth” and he’s here to talk to us about it today…

Discussion

1. “Personal background”

  • You’ve been on this show before, but for newcomers would you please tell us a little bit more about yourself?

2. “Book origin”

  • In the Foreword of your book, Grant Hudson explains how this book came about. Would you mind telling your own version of this story?

3. “Topic division”

  • Your book is a series of short essays. How did the two of you decide what you were each going to write about?

4. “The main thread”

  • What is the main thread which runs through the book and unites all these essays?

5. “Visiting C. S. Lewis’s home The Kilns”

  • Let’s talk about some of your essays… You cover a wide range of topics, including two rather personal subjects. The first is your visit to Lewis’ home, The Kilns. Would you mind telling us about that?

6. “Logos Theatre”

  • The other personal essay related to you seeing a production by the Logos Theatre. I’ve long admired their productions, but unfortunately never been able to attend. What was it like to see The Horse and His Boy on stage?
  • After seeing the Logos Theatre stage production, do you have any tips for Netflix when they come to adapt that Narnian chronicle?

7. “The Legacy of George MacDonald”

8. “Joy Davidman Lewis”

9. “The Humor and Wit of G.K. Chesterton”

10. “Owen Barfield, Language, Science and Theology”

11. “Charles Williams, Magic and Myth”

12. “The Eccentric Dorothy Sayers”

13. “The Future”
